Common Conditions in Corrections

 

 Purpose: This course focuses on common conditions seen in correctional health care and the nurse‚Äôs role in the management of these conditions, with consideration given to race and culture. The course begins with a look at assessment with special attention to the primary care setting. Then the course will look at multiple chronic diseases including: diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux, hypertension, asthma, tuberculosis, HIV and chronic pain. The course will also look at multiple mental health conditions commonly seen in correctional health care.

15.    Discuss the clinical work up of HIV infection and AIDS.

17.    Compare and contrast acute versus chronic pain and nociceptive pain versus neuropathic pain.

18.    Discuss the management of pain with the use of non-pharmacological and pharmacological options.

19.    List the diagnostic criteria for depression, anxiety, bipolar disease, and schizophrenia.

20.    Compare and contrast the treatment modalities for depression, anxiety, bipolar disease and schizophrenia.

21.    List three reasons the older adult is particularly susceptible to the deleterious effects of alcohol.

22.    Differentiate between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence.
