Common Conditions in the Older Adult, Part 1 |
Purpose: This course focuses on common conditions seen in geriatric patients with special attention to the nursing home and the nurse’s
role in the management of these conditions, with consideration given to race and culture. The course begins with an overview of geriatric assessment.
Then it goes into medical conditions seen in geriatric patients including hypertension, heart failure, gastroesophageal reflux disease.

change for each major body system in the older adult.
3.
Identify five risks
associated with hypertension.
4.
List five common drugs used
to treat hypertension and their major side effects.
5.
Identify five signs and
symptoms suggestive of heart failure.
6.
List three treatments used
to manage heart failure.
7.
List three common and three
worrisome signs and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
8.
Identify the role of
treatment of GERD on the prevention of complications.
